Lepota
Lepota is a film study about Russian visual culture from Bang Bang Education Design School. Contemporary Russian designers and design studios took part in the anthology film. In their reflections on the inheritance of the Russian visual tradition, they delve into the most diverse nooks and crannies of history.
Our film fragment explores how the bold experiments of Soviet graphic artists and typographers influenced modern Cyrillic lettering and which role the Swiss-style functional font played in it.
Working with typography played an essential role in creating the video. The design agency ONY developed the proprietary font Helvetica ONY for the case.
We tried to emphasise the spirit of experimentation that characterised the creation of Cyrillic Helvetica, combining the aesthetics of that time with the techniques of modern CG language.
The video incorporates various attributes of the Soviet period: typography, abstract art, collage, and Soviet architectural modernism.
We wanted to show the uniqueness of the findings of Soviet typographers, as well as the relevance of this plasticity and aesthetics today.
